aloha Denise,
We're flattered that you've come to us in your search for information about Hawaiian gods and goddesses. There is some information at other locations on the Internet. Go to to "Find" on your server navigator for "Hawaii mythology". You will find a list of the gods you ask about, and what area of the elements/nature they stood for under the subject "Hawaiian mythology & Religion". It's listed as "Gods and Goddesses of Mythology". Books on the subject are also listed. You may find some in university libraries, or a library search may locate the titles at the Library of Congress.

While ancient poems certainly were chanted to various gods of Hawaiian mythology, just as they have been by other cultures since the beginnings of time, little music is composed or sung in contemporary times about these familiar mythological figures. The most recent reference may be the late Brudda Iz's recording "Maui-Supergod, telling the story of the legendary impish god Maui.

Good luck with your project. If you ever want information about Hawaiian music, however, do contact us again.

I am looking for an image of the Hawiian godess Hina. You are suppose to be able to see her in the full moon. She is the mate of Ku. She has about 7-8 different names all starting with Hina-
Any image you cn find for me would be greatly!!!! appreciated. Thank You Holly from California

There are excellent reference resources available on the Internet. Just use one of the search engines -- such as www.google.com -- and I'm sure you'll come up with enough material to do a lengthy report.

Best of luck!

I am planning a Hawaiian themed bridal shower and was wondering if anyone could tell me if Hawaii has a Godess of love? If there is one, could you include some history on this? Thank you.

Hello, I was wondering about the tiki gods, and if there are several different ones, and if so if they have different names and guard or stand for different things? All the ones I see look similar and I was just wondering if they are branched off of just one. I'm designing a tiki tattoo for myself and was just wondering if the way it looks means something. Thanks!

Need help in assisting a 4th grade class with a presentation of the story of Pele, her travel to the Hawaiian Islands. Looking for suggestions: chants to use Ka Hua, kahiko or any 'auana that talks about her, her life, Hi'iaka, etc. Trying to involve the whole class. Adapting a story from the following resources: N.B. Emerson, Aunty Pua Kanaka'ole Kanahele, and Na Mo'olelo Hawai'i o ka Wa Kahiko and help from Bishop Museum. I would love ANY other suggestions. Trying to stay away from chants and hula kahiko with traditional movements - not sure if the 4th graders can handle those steps. Mahalo, Mohala

There is a tremendous amount of information regarding demi gods and goddesses of Hawaiian mythology and their stories are vast and differ as are the flowers that scent the islands. The wonderful ability of Hawai`i '(s) bards "i ka wa kahiko" are confirmed as you study these publications.

I have found 2 schools regarding Pele. One school is that she comes from Tahiti and another school says she hails from Samoa. If my memory serves me right, the version with a Samoa origin says the name Pele was not her personal name but a family name and the immigration of the family to the big island of Hawai`i consisted of several family members. This version was authored by His Majesty David Kalakaua in a book. In the book there is a chapter titled, "The apothesis of Pele." Happy reading.

In my opinion it would be more proper to list them as Kane, Ku and Lono. According to some chants that I have in my possession Kane is accredited to being the creator of the universe as we know it. This triad of Gods (notice the capital "G") though they were individual beings were worshiped by the Hawaiians under the title "Kane Oie." Though Kanaloa often times is included with this trio I have found in some writings that Kanaloa rose to his present status centuries later as did Pele but was never at equal status with the "Kane Oie" group. If you have found this helpful and would like more from where this came from . . . message me.
