| I am writing a story and would like to know what the word is for the Frigate bird in Hawaiian is. Also, how would a 30 year old single Hawaiian female greet a respected senior man who is part of her ohana? |

A frigate bird is called an IWA. Haleiwa on Oahu is the place of the frigate bird or iwa. I call all the older men in my ohana "Uncle." That has always worked and you can't go wrong. Aloha, Alika |

Also, I have been told that the iwa bird is used as a metaphor to describe a beautiful person. Hence, "hale'iwa" is poetically the "home of the beautiful person or persons." |
