For years I have been interested in this dynamic individual. When I was a child, his shows from Hawaii helped ignite my perpetual passion for the subject. Has anyone Written on the subject of Arthur Godfrey's impact on Hawaiian mmusic? I sure would like to communicate with others who remember, as I do.

Arthur Godfrey was responsible for re-igniting the interest in playing 'ukulele on the mainland. The first to do that was Sonny Cunha, when he went from Hawai'i to Yale, taking his 'ukulele with him Sonny Cunha is in the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. CBS Radio in NY may have info for you on Godfrey, as this was the network that carried his show for many years.

As a child I remeber something akin to the first Live with Regis and kathy Lee only it was Arthur Godfrey and as I remember a different hostess each week,

I believe Julius LaRosa was on one of the shows we listened to This was days and years before T.V.

I remember the fun we had listening to Him and his deep resonant voice.

Thanks for calling me back to my childhhood. When we get older sometimes we forget we ever were children, yet those were the best days of our lives!

Cheers/Chalri

There was a hula dancer called Moana (stage name) & a middle aged woman called Hilo Hattie (I think). Wasn't the show called "Hawaii Calls"?

I have a very large collection of Hawaiian records. My problem is that I know longer have the room I once had to store them. I'm sure other people have the same problem. There's probably more Hawaiian records in California than there is in Hawaii. I would like to donate them. If there was a Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame here in San Diego, for example, I would gladly donate my collection to it. That way, I could be sure they're getting a good home, and be listened to by myself and others who love Hawaiian music. Do you have any thoughts on this subject or suggestions.

Hi John! In reply to your question. The little grass shack is in Kealakakua Hawaii, which is on the big Island of Hawaii. I have a version of this song done by a group from Maui. They are a Husband and wife team who sings at one of the Hotels there. They are known as Herb and Dee. They make great music and made a tape many years ago which eventually became a cd. I still play it when I want a touch of the islands. Any more info if any, I will gladly supply. Regards, Steve DeLury Sacramento Calif.

Hi,

Forever and a day now I have tried to find out anything about Lou Ann Sims who also appeared on the Arthur Godfrey show during the same time the Hawaian lady you care for did. Also appearing on there was someone by the name of Jeanetter, Frank, Marian Marlow. Ask your friend, the one you care for is she knows what ever happened to Lou Ann Sims.

Thank you.

I too was a fan of Godfrey. My wife and I just returned from a vacation in Waikiki for the third year in a row, and I am puzzled why we didn't see any mention of him. I asked a store owner about him and she pointed us to the Waikiki Moana on Kapalioni (she told us that is the hotel where he had his TV show). We visited the museum on their 2nd floor, but found no mention of Mr. Godfrey. There seems to be little published about him.

The female singer alluded to in one of the messages posted above was, I believe, Janet Davis. I was very young when his show was on TV, but my mother watched him religiously, and I still remember some of those shows, generally. My mother remembered Arthur being in the pool as he was broadcasting his show from the (Waikiki Moana?). As he rose from the water, his trunks slipped off. I think he went back down into the water just in time..

I to used to watch the Arthur Godfrey show. I was a little too young for Lou Ann Sims, but not young enough to have an awful crush on her. If I am not mistaken, I think she appeared one winter for the winter carnival in Old Forge, NY. Oh how I wanted to approach her and tell her how much I appreciated her, but I was too small, and got pushed out of the way by others. From then on, all I could do was look at her on the TV set we had. I have often wondered where she is now, and how life has treated her.

I was named after Lou Ann Sims some 54 years ago. I would be very interested in getting any information, recordings, photos that anyone would like to share. Research has left me clueless except for the fact that she appeared on Godfreys show which my parents had already told me. Please let me hear from anyone that might be able to share information about my namesake.

Try spelling Lou Ann's last name as "Simms," and you will find numerous references to her when you Google her name. One reference states that "In her subsequent life, she became a private but passionate Hollywood-area supporter of the victims of substance abuse, one motivated by her own struggles with alcohol. While still active in that social welfare role, the former television and recording celebrity died of pancreatic cancer on September 21, 2003."

Good luck!

Subject: More about Arthur Godfrey
Posted on 8/21/07 at 7:03pm

Arthur Godfrey loved the quiet island of Maui, especially the far N.E.corner where the road ended at Hana. There one found Hasegawa's General Store, which Arthur sang about.Hasegawa's carried EVERYTHING - great, because there wasn't another store for many miles west along the ONLY road, a very winding, difficult drive, and NO road to the east. There in the tiny town of Hana was a small chapel. Charles Lindberg and his wife, Ann Murrow Lindberg are buried in the churchyard,in the seclusion Lindberg sought after the kidnapping and death of their only child. Arthur piloted small aircraft. Godfrey was a strong advocate of vasectomies,an operation which prevents a man from fathering (another)child. This was back when there was fear of overpopulation of the earth. He set an example by getting a vasectomy himself. He appeared at events promoting vasectomies wearing a lapel pin in the form of the male sign (a circle with an arrow up and to the right)with a break in the circle signify
ing that the wearer could not father a child.

Hello, I dearly loved this show and watched it every time it was on. I too wonder what happened to all those lovely people, Frank Parker, Marian Marlow, Janet Davis and any of the others that appeared there. I did hear that LouAnn Simms has died and that the Hawaiian lady is now being cared for by someone. I do wish that there was more history of a lot of the old TV shows that were on in the 1950's. There should be more "Where Are They Now" on television, so we can remember our old friends. This was the golden age of television, and we grew up with these friends only to have them gone.

For June Sims:

Perhaps you can clarify something about Lou Ann Sims for me. There was a very musical family, the Sims, which included James "Zoot" Sims, a great jazz tenor sax player, and Ray Sims, a trombonist for years with the Les Brown Band.
Was your aunt, Lou Ann Sims, their sister or otherwise related to them? I used to love Lou Ann's voice.

Lou Ann Sims was your aunt? Fabulous!! When I was five, I was given a Lou Ann Sims doll for Christmas. I literally loved the hair off that doll. When I was 10, she was again given to me, complete with new hair and a beautiful red dress. I carried her with me until I was in my 20s and then somehow she got lost in a move. Godfrey's greatest Hawaiian impact was the resurgence of the 'ukulele on the mainland. Stores sold out, guitar teachers learned - or re-learned 'ukulele chords/music/all da kine. I was just a kid at the time, but I do recall a boy on the block getting an 'ukulele for Christmas.

Yes, I remember the show very well, I grew up to become an opera singer and later an Elementary Teacher. The singing was inspired by Marian Marlow, the beautiful lady on the Arthur Godfrey show with the gorgeous voice.. Everytime I hear the song "I Concentrate on You" I think of Marion Marlow.....does anyone know what happened to her?
Arthur Godfrey made one mistake----he fired Julius La Rosa ON THE PROGRAM. From that time on, many of us lost respect for the ol' crooner....What a waste!!!!!!!

Not sure if I spelled that correctly! Now I have learned quite a lot about Arthur through various articles I've read and posts made on an old time radio forum, but this is a new one one me. I know he had become a staunch environmentalist and conservationist, and in those days when they thought the earth might become over-populated, I can see where that would have concerned him greatly.

I have always admired Arthur because he put his example where his mouth was. If he was passionate about any issue or cause, he acted upon it, didn't just give it lip service.

As for his wife (which one -- he was married twice), I assume you mean his second spouse, Mary Bourke, I doubt she would be alive anymore. Don't know when she was born, but if it was around the same time as Arthur (1903), she would be a centurian today, and then some.

I am very happy to find another forum full of AG fans. I always liked him, and I think he got a horribly bum rap with all the negative publicity that happened to him after he fired Julius La Rosa. The little upstart had it coming!

Thank you for welcoming me to this forum (I hope)

YOUR FINAL VECTOR (BROUGHT YOU HOME)

That day in March, as Spring was new,
you made a flight in Heaven's plane --
and, oh, the view you must have seen! --
beyond the clouds, beyond the stars,
beyond all things known to us
who live confined by gravity!
That day in March, you flew anew --
freed from all your earthly bonds!

No licenses were needed, then -- no rules
of flight, no maps or charts. You turned
your face into the light and left behind
your battered bones and choking lung,
and found a freedom new and true --
A blessedness you found that day
unlike any you had known!

And all those hours and days you'd lived
froze themselves in history,
as you glided gracefully
along that runway out of time.
Bless you, Arthur -- for now you rest
within the arms of Love, itself --
Eternal Love Personified!
As you touched down in His sweet breast,
your final vector brought you home.

In case anyone has been wondering whatever happened to Mary Bourke Godfrey, Arthur's second wife, I recently learned that she passed away on May 22, 1997. She is buried next to Arthur in Union Cemetery in Leesburg, VA.

For more information: www.findagrave.com

Mary now has her own memorial page on that website, as does Arthur.

I've also finally learned the name of Arthur's first wife: Catherine Collins. She left him early on in the marriage, and took with her their infant son, Richard.

Richard later came to live with Arthur and Mary on their Leesburg farm, and loved Mary as his own mother.

Just thought I'd share some of this info, in case anyone has been curious ...
