My 93 year-old grandfather is still a great lover of Hawaiian music. He played the ukelele as well as the steel guitar when he was younger, and has a huge collection of sheet music which he still plays on the piano. Would you be able to tell me if there are any recordings of an Hawaiian band who toured England in the 1940's. They were called 'Felix Mendellsohn and his Hawaiian Serenaders' and my grandfather actually had a jamming session with them backstage!! It would make an old man very happy if I could track down one of their recordings - especially if it has 'On the Beach at Waikiki' on it! Many thanks,

Tina Gandy

Your best source will be John Marsden in Sheffield, England. John is a well-known Hawaiian music archivist, and should have an answer for you. If you can find the late George Kanahele's encyclopedia "Hawaiian Music & Musicians" in a library, you will find a write-up on him. He made many recordings in his lifetime, but I'm not sure any are now available outside of private collections.

One of their albums was recently released in CD format. You'll find it here:

Hi Tina.

I saw your email.
Probably you've had lots of answers by now, but anyhow, the F.M. group was British and extremely popular in UK during 40's and early 50's.
I think he used quite a few imported singers but the instrumentalists were, I think, British. He had a couple of very good steel players - one, I think was called Roland ... something

I learned to play steel by listening to old FM recordings. I was living in Scotland at the time, and formed a small Hawaiian combo that earned enough money to stop me from starving as a young and relatively penniless person ! That guitar got me into TV and later earned more cash after I emigrated to Canada.
Now working in Ukraine, and thinking about setting up a Hawaiian bar with old-style hawaiian music here in Kiev.

There are still FM recordings about. Even CD's.
Use the Freeserve search engine,(www.freeserve.com) and just type the name in the search box (try different variations of the spelling !)
If I can suggest - and if you have sound on your computer, find www.hawaiian-music.com
This site broadcasts free of charge, the old Hawaii Calls radio shows, hosted by Webley Edwards. Beautiful music. They have a show-base now of some 8 shows. Take your pick.
Your Grandad would enjoy it.

I have already mentioned this in another section of the forum - but to recap
several film clips of the various Felix Mendelssohn bands are availible
for free downloading on the net from

www.britishpathe.com

The picture quality is poor, but the soundtracks are terrific (& the downloading proceedure is a right bore) and - as stated elsewhere -
if anyone can identify the piece played on
the 2nd of December 1940 - I'd be very grateful
to know about it.

Thanks
