I was watching the Hawaiian music documentary "Hawaiian Rainbow" and saw the Sam Bernard Trio playing, possibly on Kaua'i. Does anyone know if they did any recording? I haven't been able to find anything of theirs. Sam Bernard has a beautiful falsetto.
Any info would be appreciated.

I know that Sam Bernard made 2 recordings, but I believe they were listed as solo recordings. They have been out of print for some time now. I forget the label and other details, but I know it was produced by the same person who did such groups as Kaeo (?). John Ching (?). I know I'd love to find them myself. I played music for a couple of years with Darrell Lupenui and sat in every once in awhile with Sam, Mark Yim and Darrell. Those sure were fun times! If you find anything, let me know too!

I distinctly remember Sam's wonderful falsetto voice, as we enjoyed a luau in Waikiki. I believe the year was 1991. If there are CD's available, I would certainly be interested.

Mahalo nui!

I too know of Sam Bernard. For my 30 yrs, in my eyes and heart he will always be the very best falsetto I have heard in my 33 yrs life time. And also the very best Kumu Hula as well as hula instructor for many many people that have come and gone . He is one of many that passed thru life with lots of knowledge and love for Hula as well as perpetuating the hawaiian language. His love for Song and Dance lives on as he touched many. And till today his music lives on thru people he have touched.Thank you all for keeping his music alive.

He was my Godfather.

When did Sam Bernard pass away? I never read anything about his passing until I've been reading the postings in this group.

Unfortunately, uncle Sam walked through the gates of heaven on Feb. 17. I think it was 2001, give or take a year. I remember the date (Feb. 17) because it was a week after one of my sons b-day, and 4 days after my oldest ones, also. We were blessed to have had his wonderful leo and I am happy that someone got him on video(Hawaiian Rainbow) for us to enjoy for years to come. I pray they will come out on DVD soon. And now that CD's are Mastering old (some thought lost)hawaiian recordings, that they will grace us with some of Sam's great work on CD. Along with uncle Dennis Pavao and George Helms...uncle Sam is a huge inspiration for me to pursue leo ki'eki'e. Mahalo nui e kupuna, Keali'i Kahumoku

Aloha all--Sam Bernard had a voice from heaven. The documentary "Hawaiian Rainbow" has been reissued on DVD; can be ordered from amazon.com.

Question: Sam Bernard's two records were issued by Ken Post's label Kahanu records in the early 1980s. I bought the cassettes. The insert said that sheets with lyrics could be requested by writing to Kahanu. But by the time I did, Kahanu was out of business. Does anyone out there have the lyrics sheets?

thanks,
Amy K.
