Hi Maile-Anne, Apparently Chick wrote and/or performed quite a few great songs... none have been that easy to find, but a few are now on CD. I have some rare photos of your grandfather and would love to talk more with you about Chick. |

Also... George Kainapau recorded an amazing falsetto version of "Lei Aloha" in the 1950s. Worth seeking out. |

I apologize if this inquiry appears more than once- it did not appear to take the message before. I recently came across an old wooden canoe paddle with Chick's name painted across the blade in a very fancy script. Having lived in Hawaii before and having a copy of of the book "Waikiki Beach Boys", I was stunned by what I thought it was. Interestingly there is a photo in the book of Mr. Daniels in shorts that bear the smae name and fancy script embroidered in them. I've tried to research it to see if I could find any history on it, but I believe it belonged to him. Can anyone tell me about it? I have a couple of photos I could email. Mahalo, Dale |

Aloha Maile-Anne, Chick is my grandfather also. My mom, Mary Lee, was from his second marriage to my grandmother, Violet Ornellas. You can find a recording of the song, "Lei Aloha" On the cd-"Waltah Clarke Presents A Beach Boy Party" which is available through Mele.com. I've been singing the song myself for about 10 years or so since coming across the cd online. Grandpa also sings quite few other songs on the cd. |

Dale, Chick is my grandfather, my mother, Mary Lee is from his second marriage to my grandmother, Violet Ornellas. The paddle is probably from his days at the Outrigger Canoe Club when it was located between the Moana Hotel and the Royal Hawaiian. Grandpa work at the Royal Hawaiian as a beach attendant(beachboy) until around '58 or '59. He was also singer and musician at the Royal when he first started there back in the late '20's and early '30's. |
