I'm very new to Hawaiian music. I found a couple old 78 rpm records with George Kainapau singing with the Royal Hawaiian Serenaders, and his falsetto voice is very enjoyable. I don't see too much information about him on the internet. Is there some place I can find out more about him? Thanks! Aloha! Cliff |

The late George Kainapau...great falsetto singer, traveled the world singing Hawaiian music. Born in Hilo 1905 (sorry, but I don't have date of his passing). His is the voice heard singing "Sweet Leilani" with Bing Crosby in the old movie, "Waikiki Wedding" -- and he can be heard in some other old movies, too. Although none of his solo recordings have made it to CD status, he can be heard on several anthology albums which feature vintage Hawaiian music. |

Hello... My Father is George Kainapau's nephew... Uncle passed away in 1992, here on the mainland in the San Diego area. I can't even recall with he and my Aunty Ruth left the Islands to come here, but I know he enjoyed his final years golfing and the weather of southern California. Aunty Ruth passed away, just before 200o. He was a brilliant performer and created a name for himself during his time. I'm in the process of scanning a number of old newspaper articles that my Sister and I recently came across, and thought I'd do a little online searching for his name to see what I came up with. And here I am....what a surprise to see people talking about him. |

George kainapau was my great Uncle. I helped handle his services in Honlulu in 1992. My Mother, Pualani Mossman (Avon) passed last week and rekindled old and great memories. http://starbulletin.com/2006/05/10/news/story07.html Aloha, Randy Avon |

I have an old cassette tape with George singing " Blue Hawaii". It blew me away! He has a fantastic falsetto voice and I want to hear more, much more. Did he only sing in falsetto? How can I hear more? James Carter 7/3/06 |

Sadly, none of his many solo recordings ever made it to CD format -- but you can usually pick up used vinyls of his music at specialty retailers. |

Aloha: George Kainapau is remembered as “Hawaii’s Falsetto King”. Born in Hilo, Hawaii on May 22, 1905, he died in Seal Beach, California at the age of 87 on September 14, 1992. George began singing at the Volcano House in the 1920’s. In 1928, Sol Ho’opii,”Hawaii’s Steel Guitar King”, (1902 to November 16, 1953), took George on a tour of the Hawaiian Islands, and then on to Hollywood. Kainapau made his recording debut on January 18, 1929, at the age of 23, singing “Hilo Hanakahi” with Sol Hoopii and Andy Iona. He would go on to perform with groups led by Lani McIntire, Ray Kinney, and Danny Stewart, and headline in numerous clubs, both on the mainland and in Hawaii. Kainapau’s strong, controlled, and clear voice, void of any breathiness, could smoothly glide from the falsetto register to high tenor without any break, or upon command, could utilize the Hawaiian ha’i ornament just as easily. His ability to sing in G above a middle C is sometimes referred to as a high falsetto. His appearances in a string of Hollywood’s Hawaiian-themed films brought Hawaiian falsetto singing to the attention of a worldwide audience, spawning numerous falsetto sing ers outside of Hawaii. You can enjoy George's rendition of Mokihana Fernandez’s composition, “Mauna Kea”, on the compact disc, "Legends of Falsetto". George Kainapau recorded a stunning version on “Bell Records”, in his inimitable falsetto fashion, backed by George Archer and the Pagans."Mauna Kea" was the theme song for RKO-Radio’s film “Bird of Paradise”, released in August 1932, starring Joel McCrea and Dolores del Rio. (Mauna Kea, a towering volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, has been dormant for over 2,000 years.) Mahalo plenty, Harry B. Harry B. Aloha: I also knew George well, and was (according to him) one of the few friends in Hawai`i who kept in touch with him after he moved back to California. We corresponded occasionally until shortly before his death. I too have some of his recordings -- including Bell Records, Urania Records, and Decca -- and he was truly one of the greatest....and a real gentleman. Keith |

Am trying to burn a CD of wedding Song and Aloha Oi in particular, for a musical memorial on Oct. 12 for a beautiful deceased lady born in Honolulu 93 yrs ago. Already have some Gabby Painui and some other Panini songs, but my friend's husband was orchestra leader at Royal Hawaiian after the war - Will Rusinak. He remembers G. Ka'inapau well and never tired of his renditions. Many thanks for any help you can give me! trish |

We enjoyed his performances in hawaii in the 70's...(in particular - the brand new Kona Village Resort on the big island!) We spent the evening with him - he was SO nice, and so "real"...we're back in Maui this week (october 07) and I was trying to find a CD of his music and it doesn't seem to exist! we bought a cassette of his that night in 1972 and have listened to it until it's almost "gone"...he was amazing...do you know how we could get any of his recordings? |
