Aloha Carla,
Andy Cummings, who died several years ago, was a very well-known Hawaiiain singer, musician, composer and recording artist.
He is best known for his composition "Waikiki" which he wrote on a cold November day on tour with "The Paradise Islanders", because he was homesick for his beloved Hawaii.
Of the many songs he wrote, another being recorded today is "Pikake".
Andy had a fine tenor voice, and was the first to record "Waikiki". In the 1940s, he played with his group "Hawaiian Serenaders" at many Waikiki hotels.

Andy Cummings had great knowledge of Hawaiian music and culture. I met him in 1990, and we talked story about music with other friends. He mentioned that in old Hawaii culture, each district of each island had its own "theme" music, or "signature sound". For example, he said that in the song "Lahaina Luna", the music comes from the Kohala district of the Big Island. It is a very haunting melody, one that I could hear over and over again. He knew so much about Hawaiian music, he could have written books. And he was a real gentleman with a great sense of humor.

Andy Cumming's is my husband's Grandmother's brother or Grand-Uncle. He was one of the legendary greats in Hawaiian music. Andy Cummings is from a very musically talented family. Relatives include Ray Kane just to name a few. He performed all over the world, written beautiful music that endures until today. One of his many world-wide performances was at the New York World's Fair where he performed as a favor to my father, the late Danny Kwock, Senior. Aloha.

My grandfather, Richard Bowlin, has played the Ukelele all of his life. I am the fortunate grandchild to whom he has passed all of his knowledge of this style of music. Regardless, my grandpa met Andy Cummings on a trip to Hawaii. Andy gave my grandpa chords to a few songs including "Laura" and "Sophisticated Hula". I have one old record of Andy's, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to get a hold of some other recordings. I am interested, at least for my family, to keep this musical tradition alive! If anyone has information and could let me know that'd be excellent!

Andy Cummings was my grandfather on my mother's side. He taught me some thing's before he died when I was four. I know a lot of people know him, and my grandmother will not lend me some of his pictures. That is why I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get pictures of him?

I've recently become an Andy Cummings fan after listening to some of his recordings found on a compliation album, "Hukilau Hulas". I think his voice and sound are amazing. I've been trying to find other records/recordings by Andy Cummings but have not been very successful. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I searched through yahoo under Andy Cummings and his Hawaiian Serenaders and came up with alot of different websites and albums. My grandfather, David Nalu, was part of the Serenaders along with Ralph Alapai, Joe Diamond (my brother-in-laws father), and Gabby Pahinui. Happy hunting!

Aloha Makena, just thought I'd let you know that my grandfather played with Andy a very long time ago. My brother-in-law, Andy Kaimana (Joe Diamond's son) was named after your grandfather, cool huh?

There's a feeling deep in my heart
Stabbing at me just like a dart
It's a feeling heavenly

I see mem'ries out of the past
Memories that always will last
Of that place across the sea

Waikiki
At night when the shadows are falling
I hear your rolling surf calling
Calling and calling to me

Waikiki
'Tis for you that my heart is yearning
My thoughts are always returning
Out there to you across the sea

Your tropic nights and your wonderful charms
Are always in my memory
And I recall as I held in my arms
An angel sweet and heavenly

Waikiki
My whole life is empty without you
I miss that magic about you
Magic beside the sea
Magic of Waikiki

I have been an avid student of Hawaiian music since my early days of working "Hawaiian Radio" in both Honolulu and Kona, Hawai'i.
I play both ukulele and ki ho'alu.
I would be interested to find chords and lyrics to Uncle Andy's songs. Most sought after currently: chords to "Pikake," a hapa-haole song he wrote early on in his career.
Willing to share material and resources with like-minded fans of Hawaiian mele.
A hui hou,
Alapa'i Abreu

Aloha,
My name is Makena... i am Andy Cummings youngest grand- daughter... my family still has his Ukulele and i play it all the time...Waikiki is my tutu-mans signature song. While he was alive, i would go into his room, which is now mine, and take some of his personal cookie stash...he would fight to not giving me a cookie, but i got one. i love my tutu-man and what he accomplished... i wish i could do the same.

Aloha;
I am an east coast haole with family on The Big Island and a love of Hawai'i and the music.I started playing uke a year or so ago and have put aside my other instrument for it.
Andy Cummings interested me through his appearances in Eddie Kamae's 'Words, Earth & Aloha' and Uncle Ray's slack key dvd. I just received the recent re-issue of his work.
What a guy! To have learned at the knee of Alfred Alohakea, and have Gabby play steel in his band.
To just hear from his ohana1 mahalo nui loa for your personal recollections,
Sandy Martin.

Can anyone direct me to any reading in book or online to the life and career of
Andy Cummings? I only seem to find brief comments about him online. I have seen him in two films (Words, Earth & Aloha and Hawaiian Rainbow) about Hawaiian music where he is talking about other artists. I would like to read about his life and career.

Kind Regards,

Sarah

You're right -- there is woefully very little biographical information about Andy Cummings online. The good news is, the liner notes of this CD (released in 2004) have extensive information about him, both personal and professional, along with a few photos:

Anyone have the chords to "waikiki" or any other of Andy's songs? Most are fairly straightforward but I'd love to get the correct versions somehow.

Pahoehoe!

It was my humble honor to travel from time to time on assignment with "Uncle" Andy throughout the USA. On several occasions he was the one musician and I was the one dancer. I felt especially honored because he knew both my parents. At times when we would be in an airport terminal sitting gate side waiting for our connecting flight, he would take out his ukulele. He'd ask me to dance. He would sing and entertain anyone who cared to enjoy his gift of Aloha. Still today, my favorite hula is "Waikiki".
