The ali’i of Hawai’i – the kings and queens of the islands – are renowned for their extraordinary talents as songwriters. Learn about them as we showcase the compositional talents of the last of the Hawaiian Monarchy, the four siblings of the Kalakaua dynasty – King David Kalakaua, Princess Miriam Likelike, Queen Lydia Paki

(Lili’uokalani), and Prince William Pitt Leleiohoku. These four ali’i, referred to as Na Lani ‘Eha – the Royal Four - wrote some of the most treasured and beloved songs of Hawai’i. Listen as we sample their songs of love – and loss – performed by some of the Islands’ top musicians, including Manu Boyd, Ku’uipo Kumukahi, Gabby and Cyril Pahinui, Amy Hanai’ali’I, and George Kahumoku. Many of the songs played in this broadcast come from two compilation discs dedicated to the music of Na Lani ‘Eha: A Tribute to Na Lani ‘Eha (various artists) (Tropical Music, Inc., 2010) Na Lani ‘Eha (Ku’uipo Kumukahi) (The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, 2007)
